Pitoresco Fest is a street art festival held in the hilly northern Portuguese Municipality of Vila Real, which is also the capital of the province of Trás-os-Montes. I had never been to Vila Real, so I thought it would be a nice opportunity to explore the entire city by using an online street art map provided by the Pitoresco Street Art Festival organization. Pitoresco Fest is a collaboration between the arts events organization Instantes Mutantes and the Municipality of Vila Real.

What I really appreciated about the festival is the attention to local artists and many murals that are inspired by the past and the unique character of Vila Real. It may not be the most famous street art festival in Portugal, but it is undoubtedly worth a visit. In a beautiful hilly environment, the street art map takes you through all parts of the city and without mass tourism. What more can you wish for?

I have pinned all my photographed murals on the Streetartcities map to make your street art hunt a bit easier:). Download the App: Google Play App Store or find the locations on the website

During the previous editions of the festival, electricity boxes were painted by local talent and enthusiasts.

Another art project led by Instantes Mutantes is Art no Parque (location: Parque do Corgo) which was held in the year 2018. Several art interventions were placed in the park by various renowned artists (wood art by Catarina Glam, trash art at Bordalo II, wall art at Colectivo Rua,… ).

Random Street Art in Vila Real

In addition to the artworks of the Pitoresco Fest, I also encountered some Street Art/Graffiti interventions that are absolutely worth mentioning. I noticed that there is a Street Art Collective operating the city, more specifically the North Vandals Krew (Instagram), which includes the artists: Satan, Aquelequeodeia (has different tags: Hate / Heit / Heiter), Neku and BlankOne.

    1. Thanks:). It’s one of the lesser known festivals but I really recommend it. Also a beautiful charming town. Btw: from Vila Real it’s easy to make a daytrip to braganca(check streetartcities on braganca;) ). Cheersss
